Denver Urban Ministries (DenUM)
Denver Urban Ministries (DenUM) was organized in 1981 as a human service agency to provide emergency and stabilization services to the Denver metro area's most impoverished people. DenUM’s location along the region’s main traffic artery, the East Colfax corridor, is less than one mile from the Colorado State Capitol in the heart of the city. DenUM’s services include a food pantry, produce and bakery items distribution, job readiness training, rent and utility assistance, legal counseling, health screenings, assistance obtaining state-issued identification, clothing bank, and a community urban education program.
DenUM’s impact is measured not only by the fact that the agency provides approximately 70,000 client contacts each year, but also by stories of the real people who come to DenUM for help. For example, Joan came to DenUM with a referral from another agency. Joan is on disability income because of multiple sclerosis and arthritis. She helps support three children and six grandchildren. Every week, Joan comes to DenUM on Thursday for fresh produce. “A food basket around the holidays is great. I don’t make enough money to buy food,” Joan said. “Thanks for this place!” she exclaimed.
